THE INTERNET OF THINGS – INDUSTRY EVENTS
Here at Interactive Communications we keep a close eye on all development in the telematics industry so that we can keep you up to date with what’s going on – all the latest news and views that allow you to keep your finger on the pulse. We’ve already written about how important it is to attend industry events and one of the most important events for the telematics industry was the Internet of Things World Forum 2014 which took place a couple of weeks ago in London.
First of all, what is the Internet of Things? This is the term now used to describe the interconnection of uniquely identifiable embedded computing devices within the existing Internet structure. The Internet of Things (IoT) is bringing us advanced connectivity of services, systems and devices going beyond machine to machine communications (M2M) and is expected to lead to automation in nearly everything. By the year 2020 it’s predicted that there will be nearly 26 billion devices on the IoT - a wide range of devices such as:
Heart monitoring implants
Cars with built in sensors
Field operation devices that can be used to assist in search and rescue operations
Biochip transponders on farm animals and pets
- Household machines like washer/dryers and smart thermostat systems
The two day event boasted keynote speakers like David Keene, Head of Marketing at Google for Work and Steve Dunbar, IoT Commercial Director at Microsoft, to name but a few. Besides Google and Microsoft, the Internet of Things companies that attended the event include 0₂, Cisco, Jaguar Landrover, British Gas, Orange – the list goes on. We all know that where Google and Microsoft go, the rest of us usually follow, so it’s time to jump on the bandwagon and immerse yourself in the opportunities and possibilities that are coming our way with the Internet of Things.
If you missed out on the recent conference, don’t despair. You can check out the website here and catch up on all the things you may have missed. If you want to find out more or bring yourself up to speed on what’s happening at the cutting edge of the telematics industry, then you could arrange to attend the M2M World Congress which will also be held in London next April.
Modern technology is change the way in which we live, work and play and there will be opportunities out there for entrepreneurs and companies with the vision and courage to take hold of the future and carve out their path to success. Technological advances in recent years have reshaped our world and our work almost beyond recognition, but you ain’t seen nothing yet. Moore’s Law guarantees that more changes are coming, changes that would have been the stuff of science fiction a mere twenty years ago. If you want your company to prosper and stay competitive in the coming years, then keeping up with advances and developments in the industry by attending events like this is absolutely essential. It’s an investment in a brighter future for your company, your employees and yourself.
